Arrive Friday evening, beach + old town Saturday morning, Lottemaa all day Sunday, and drive home Sunday evening with happy, exhausted kids. Two-night minimum because Lottemaa alone is a full 6–8 hour day and you’ll want the morning before in Pärnu town to actually feel the seaside summer the city is famous for. A one-night trip is doable but rushed.

This guide is the itinerary we’d give a friend with kids who’s never been to Pärnu before. It covers when to come, where to stay, the order to do things in, how to fit Lottemaa into the rhythm of the weekend, and what to eat. We’re the Lottemaa team and we live an hour’s drive from here — these are our actual recommendations, not a tourism-board press release.

Why Pärnu works for a family weekend

Pärnu is officially Estonia’s “summer capital” — a 50,000-person resort town on the southwest coast where the entire country traditionally migrates in July. The city was built around its beach in the late 1800s as a spa town, and the bones still show: a wide white-sand beach with shallow water perfect for small kids, a tree-lined promenade for prams and bikes, a compact wooden old town you can walk in an afternoon, and Lottemaa twenty minutes outside the city as the day-anchor that makes the whole weekend worth the drive.

It’s the right scale for a family weekend. Tallinn is bigger and more dramatic. Tartu is smarter and more student-y. But Pärnu is the only Estonian city built specifically around summer with kids, and it works exactly that way.

When to come

Window

What it’s like

Our take

13–22 June (early season)

Lottemaa just opened, sea water still 15–17°C (cold for swimming), city quiet, no queues anywhere.

Best for crowd-averse families. The beach is for sandcastles, not swimming.

Jaanipäev weekend (around 24 June)

Estonian midsummer. Special programme at Lottemaa, traditional bonfires in town, vibrant atmosphere.

Unique cultural experience but busier. See our midsummer guide.

1–15 July (peak season)

Sea around 19–21°C, all of Estonia and many Finns here, the city is at full capacity, restaurants need reservations.

Most vibrant weekend, but book everything 4+ weeks ahead.

15 July – 15 August

Warmest water (21–23°C), longest days, weekday visits noticeably calmer than weekends.

Our top recommendation: come on a Sunday–Tuesday slot. All the summer, none of the queues.

16–30 August (late season)

Lottemaa winding down to closing weekend, water still warm, families with school-age kids gone, locals back from holiday.

Quietest, warmest, often the best photos. Bring a thin jacket for evenings.

The two-night, three-day itinerary

Friday evening: arrive and unwind

Plan to be in Pärnu by 18:00 at the latest. Check into your hotel (recommendations below), drop bags, and walk to the beach for the evening — Estonian summer light doesn’t drop until 22:00 or later, so you have hours of soft golden sun for the kids to run sand without the day’s full crowd.

For Friday dinner, our pick is somewhere in the old town along Rüütli or Nikolai street. Avoid the boardwalk pizza chains. The good local places: Mahedik (modern Estonian, kid-friendly), Stop Cafe (casual and reliable), or any of the small bistros around Vana-Pärnu. Eat early — Estonian kitchens close around 21:00 even in summer.

Evening walk: from dinner, walk down to the beach promenade. The sunset over the Gulf of Riga from Pärnu pier is one of those experiences kids remember. Ice cream on the way back.

Saturday: beach, old town, slow morning

The Saturday formula is “slow morning, beach noon, old town afternoon, hotel pool evening.” It saves the big-day intensity for Sunday at Lottemaa.

Hotel breakfast. Don’t skip it. Estonian hotel breakfasts are excellent and your kids will eat better here than anywhere else all day.

9:30–10:00 to the beach. Find a spot near the lifeguard tower, set up, and let the kids dig until lunch. Beach toys are cheap to buy at the kiosks if you didn’t pack any.

12:30 lunch on the beach. The beach kiosks do simple lunch (wraps, salads, sausages, ice cream). Saves the pack-up disruption.

14:00–16:00 old town. Walk the wooden streets, visit the Pärnu Museum (small and very kid-tolerant), browse the Town Hall area, get a bite at one of the bakery-cafés (Supelsaksad is the famous one for cakes).

16:30 back to the hotel. Pool, sauna, quiet hour for the under-5s, breathe.

19:00 dinner. Either back into town or whatever the hotel restaurant is serving — Pärnu hotel restaurants are usually solid.

21:00 sunset stroll or hotel bed. Read the room. Kids who napped will want the sunset; kids who didn’t, won’t.

Sunday: Lottemaa, the full day

This is the day the whole weekend builds toward. Lottemaa is open 10:00–19:00 and you’ll want 6–8 hours there to actually do it justice.

Hotel breakfast then check out. Most hotels hold bags until evening — ask at reception.

10:00 arrive at Lottemaa. The park is 20 minutes by car from central Pärnu. Full directions here.

Morning: characters and shows. Lotte’s house, Bruno’s workshop, catch the first theatre show. Energy is highest now — use it on the things kids will talk about most.

13:00 lunch at the park restaurant. Big indoor dining hall, real food, time to reset.

14:00–17:00 attractions and the planetarium. The outdoor rides, the trampolines, the lake-edge area. The planetarium show is a perfect mid-afternoon dark-and-quiet break for tired kids.

17:00–18:30 second wind. Most families leave around 17:00; the last 90 minutes are the quietest, prettiest hours of the day. Worth staying if your kids have anything left.

19:00 close and drive. Back to Pärnu, grab the bags from the hotel, dinner on the road or once you’re home.

For full park strategy, see our Lottemaa tickets guide and the best-age post. For a wet forecast on Sunday, the rainy-day guide has the dry-route plan.

Where to stay in Pärnu with kids

Pärnu has three useful accommodation tiers for families. We’ve listed them in order of how often we hear families recommend them on the way out:

Family spa hotels

The default and easiest choice. Big rooms, pool, sauna, breakfast included, walking distance to beach.

Estonia Resort Hotel & Spa — closest thing Pärnu has to a premium family hotel. Big pool, kids’ areas, breakfast that wins parents over.

Strand Spa & Conference Hotel — right on the beach, the closest pool-and-beach combination in town.

Hedon Spa & Hotel — historic 1920s spa building, beautifully renovated. Strong for grandparents-joining trips.

Wasa Resort — slightly out of centre but quiet, family-room layouts, popular with families travelling with grandparents.

Self-catering apartments

Worth it if you’re three nights or more, or if your kids have specific food needs. Lots of options near the beach via the usual booking platforms — look for “Mai” or “Rannarajoon” neighbourhoods (a 10-minute walk from beach to old town).

Camping and cottages

The Pärnu region has several family campsites within 15 minutes of town if you want the kids in nature. Konse Holiday Centre is the most reliable; Valgeranna camping is more rustic. Both are between Pärnu and Lottemaa, which is handy for the Sunday plan.

The three-day version

If you have a third day, the cleanest add is Friday evening + Saturday beach + Sunday Lottemaa + Monday wind-down. The Monday is for whatever your kids loved most: more beach, the Tervise Paradiis indoor water park if it rained on you Saturday, the Soomaa National Park boardwalks (45 minutes inland), or a slow morning at the hotel before driving home. Don’t double up Lottemaa on Monday — once is enough.

What to eat: a short Pärnu food note

Pärnu is not Tallinn — it’s a beach town, so expect beach-town food. The two things that punch above expectations:

Smoked fish from the Pärnu market. The Saturday morning fish market is small but excellent. Pick up smoked Baltic herring or salmon and have an old-town picnic.

Estonian black bread (leib) at any decent bakery. Take a loaf home.

Kringle — sweet braided cinnamon bread. Try it at Supelsaksad or any old-town bakery. Kids approve.

For sit-down dinners: Mahedik, Hingo, Edelweiss, and any of the spa hotel restaurants. Book ahead on Saturday in July.

Pärnu beach with small kids: the practical version

The water is shallow. You can wade out 100m and still be at thigh-height for an adult — Pärnu beach is genuinely the most toddler-friendly beach in the eastern Baltic.

Watch the flags. Estonia uses the green/yellow/red flag system. Red means no swimming. Most days are green or yellow.

UV is sharper than the temperature suggests. A 22°C day in Pärnu burns kids faster than a 28°C day in southern Europe. Sunscreen anyway.

Wind comes up around 14:00. Plan beach mornings, not beach afternoons.

Toilets and changing. Distributed along the beach. The promenade-side facilities are best maintained.

Driving and parking

If you’re driving in from Tallinn, Riga or the islands: the new Via Baltica is a four-lane highway most of the way, and Pärnu is well-signed. Parking in the hotel zone is paid (€1–2/hour) and the beach lot fills by 11:00 on a sunny Saturday — go straight to your hotel and walk to the beach.

For Lottemaa on Sunday: parking at the park is free, plentiful, and a 2-minute walk to the entrance.

Frequently asked questions

Is two days in Pärnu with kids enough?

Yes, two nights and three days is the right amount. Friday evening arrival, full Saturday in Pärnu, full Sunday at Lottemaa, depart Sunday evening. One night is too rushed because Lottemaa alone needs a full day; three nights is great if you can spare it but isn’t necessary.

What’s the best month to visit Pärnu with kids?

Mid-July to mid-August. The water is warmest (21–23°C), days are longest, and Lottemaa is in full operation. Mid-August onwards is quieter and just as warm — our favourite slot for crowd-averse families.

Should we do Lottemaa first or last?

Last. Save Lottemaa for Sunday so the kids have a slow Saturday to acclimate and a high-energy Sunday for the park. Reversing this means Sunday becomes an anticlimax.

Is Pärnu beach safe for toddlers?

Very. Pärnu has long shallows, fine white sand, lifeguards in season, and a flag warning system. The water rarely gets deep enough for a small child to be out of their depth within reasonable distance from shore.

Where should families with grandparents stay?

Hedon Spa & Hotel or Estonia Resort Hotel & Spa. Both have good accessibility, real spas for the grandparents, and large family rooms.

Do we need a car for a Pärnu family weekend?

Strongly recommended. Pärnu’s old town and beach are walkable, but Lottemaa is 20 minutes by car. Bus service to Lottemaa exists but is infrequent and adds 1.5+ hours to the round trip with kids. If you arrived by bus or ferry, taxis from central Pärnu to Lottemaa run around €25–30 one way.

What if the forecast is rainy?

Don’t change your plans. Lottemaa works in rain — see our rainy-day guide. For Saturday, the Tervise Paradiis indoor water park is a brilliant backup if the beach is washed out.

Can we do Lottemaa as a day trip from Tallinn or Riga?

Possible but punishing. Both cities are 1h45m to 2h drives from Lottemaa. You’d leave at 8am and get home at 9pm with one tired child. Strongly better to make it a weekend with one night in Pärnu.

The honest takeaway

Pärnu is the easiest summer weekend with kids in the Baltics. The beach is shallow and friendly, the town is small enough to feel manageable, the food is good enough, the hotels are real family hotels, and Lottemaa is the once-a-year experience that gives the weekend a story. Two nights, three days, Sunday at the park — book early for July, easier for August.

Ready to book your Pärnu family weekend?
Get your Lottemaa tickets here →
Open daily 13 June – 30 August 2026 · 20 minutes from central Pärnu

About the author: This guide was written by the Lottemaa team in Pärnu, Estonia.
